The Conference venue is situated in Stresa, on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. Stresa is approximately 45 minutes from Malpensa international airport and one hour from the city of Milan. Detailed information on the easiest itineraries, as well as on the most convenient transportation systems from the main Milan's international airports (Malpensa, Linate, Orio al Serio) is provided below.

 
 

From International Airports to Stresa

Lake Maggiore and the Conference venue in Stresa can easily be reached from the international airports of Milan Malpensa (MPX), Milano Linate (LIN), or Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY).
 
 

Private Transfers from the Airports

The fastest and easiest way to reach Lake Maggiore and get directly to the hotels is to arrange a private transfer from the international airports Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, or Bergamo Orio al Serio. This way a driver will meet the participants upon their arrival at the designated airport and take them directly to their hotel.

The transportation service from/to international airports is arranged by Palazzo dei Congressi.

A private shared shuttle service will be made available to Conference participants. The shuttle shared service is scheduled over the whole conference period and price per person is €25 from Malpensa, €40 from Linate, and €45 from Orio al Serio.

Private car and mini-van services with driver will also be available upon request. This transfer service can be shared by a maximum of three passengers for private cars, and six passengers for private mini-vans. Prices vary depending on the airport and type of vehicle.

Registered participants who wish to take advantage of the transfer service are required to contact Palazzo dei Congressi by email at segreteria@stresacongressi.it. In your enquiry please specify:

  • IABMAS 2012 / TRANSFER in the subject of the message
  • airport of arrival / departure
  • arrival / departure time, dates and flights details
  • name of the hotel you will be staying at
  • the exact number of people you will be traveling with
  • if you prefer a shared shuttle service or private transfer

Private transfers from/to other airports and main railway stations can also be arranged by Palazzo dei Congressi upon request. Price per person varies depending on the airport, type of vehicle and number of passengers sharing a ride.

From Milan Malpensa Airport


By Train (1hour 30min, 15–25€)

There are 8 daily connections from Malpensa to Stresa, but you will need to change trains en route.

From the airport's Terminal 1 take the Malpensa Express train and get off at Busto Arsizio RFI (Note: do not get off at Busto Arsizio, 2nd stop, but at Busto Arsizio RFI, 3rd stop). Malpensa Express timetable is available at:

selecting Malpensa Aiport as Departure Station and either Busto Arsizio or Milano Centrale as Arrival Stations. Tickets must be purchased at the sale offices of the station in Malpensa and validated in one of the punching machines located at the beginning of the platforms. It is strongly suggested to buy in advance also a return ticket. Please note that tickets purchased on board, or not properly validated, can be subjected to an extra fee up to 50 Euros.

From either Busto Arsizio or Milano Centrale railway stations you will then need to get a train to Stresa. Timetable and tickets are available at:

Tickets bought online do not need to be validated. Tickets purchased at the sale offices at the station are to be validated in one of the punching machines located at the beginning of the platforms before boarding the train. Tickets purchased on board, or not properly validated, can be subjected to an extra fee up to 50 Euros. Please note: some international train to Switzerland do not stop at Stresa. Check before booking.

By Bus (50min, 9€)
The Alibus shuttle service connects Malpensa to Stresa. The service has a timetable (6 journeys a day), but you need to book the day before. Information about timetable and booking procedure is available at:

By Car (50min, 50km)
Follow the signs for the A26 Genoa - Gravellona Toce motorway. Take the A26 motorway in the direction of Gravellona Toce. Keep heading towards Gravellona Toce until the Baveno exit. At Baveno follow the signs for Stresa.

By Taxi (50min, 100-150€)
The price varies according to the day and time.
 
 

From Milan Linate Airport

The Star Fly Bus service connects Linate airport with the Milano Centrale railway station in about 30 minutes. Timetable available at:

The platform of Star Fly Bus is located just in front the main exit at the arrivals level. The cost of a one way ticket is 5 Euros. Tickets can be purchased on board at no extra cost (payment by cash in Euros).

Milano Centrale railway station can also be reached by taxi. Taxi fare: about 20-30 Euros, depending on the traffic (payment by cash in Euros).

From Milano Centrale railway station you will then need to arrange your journey to Stresa by train – see details at the section “From Milan to Stresa – By Train” below.
 
 

From Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport

The Orio Shuttle Bus service connects the Orio al Serio airport with Milano Central railway station in about 50 minutes. Timetable available at:

The platform of Orio Shuttle Bus is located just in front the main exit at the arrivals level. Tickets at the airport are sold by the authorized ticket-counters and by the drivers. The cost of a one way ticket is 10 Euros if purchased at the airport (payment by cash in Euros) or 7 Euros if bought online at:

The ticket must be validated when getting on the bus. If the ticket machine is out of order, passengers must inform the driver and present the ticket to the driver.

From Milan to Stresa

By Train (1hour – 1hour 30min, 5 – 14€)
Stresa is on the main railway Milano - Simplon - Geneva - Paris. There are 21 trains a day from the two main railway stations in Milan which stop at Stresa. From Milano Porta Garibaldi railway station, take one of the 10 regional trains heading for Domodossola (1hour 30min, 5€). From Milano Centrale railway station, take one of the 6 regional trains heading for Domodossola (1hour 10min, 5€) or one of the 5 international trains heading for Geneva/Basle (55min, 14€). By Car (1hour 20min, 90 km)
Take the A8 motorway North West towards Laghi-Sesto Calende-Varese, then the A26 motorway towards Gravellona Toce to the Baveno exit. At Baveno follow the signs for Stresa.
   

Transportation in Stresa and Lake Maggiore Area

By Car
You do not need to have a car in Stresa. The main attractions can be reached by other means. The Borromean Islands are well connected by boat; Mottarone and the Alpinia garden are served by a cableway while Villa Pallavicino can be reached on foot. The other places around Lake Maggiore are connected to each other by boat. A car is useful if you want to explore inland and you can easily hire one at the airports, at Milano Centrale railway station and at Stresa. If you want to hire a car at Stresa it is advisable to book in advance.

By Boat
Stresa is connected to the major tourist resorts on Lake Maggiore by the public service and by private companies. You can buy single tickets or daily tickets which allow you to make an unlimited number of stops. At Stresa the main landing stage is in Piazza Marconi, attached to the tourist office. You can get to the Borromean Islands from a second landing stage in Lido di Stresa. If you want personalised services (for example for evening trips), a taxi-boat can be hired from either of the two landing stages in Stresa.

By Train
The railway line goes only partly around the lake. However, of noteworthy interest is the Lake Maggiore Express which connects Domodossola with Locarno along a panoramic railway through the mountains.

Taxis stands can be found in front of the Stresa railway station and the main boat landing stage. A taxi cab can be reserved by calling one of the following numbers:
